What are the advantages of Improved Kienyeji breeds over local Kienyeji breeds in Kenya

What are the advantages of Improved Kienyeji breeds over local Kienyeji breeds?

The term ‘improved’ means the breed shows increased productivity. As compared to local breeds. i.e. for instance, its birds produce: more eggs, are heavier. And are more immune to diseases than local breeds. Samples of improved Kienyeji brands available within the country are: KARI Kienyeji, Kuroiler (from Uganda) and Rainbow Rooster.

Local breeds are the breeds of chicken natively found within the country; those tons folks had on our farms growing up that were sourced from our local market.

Poultry farmers are commonly either rearing birds for meat or for eggs. The Improved Kienyeji breeds mentioned above are great for both purposes; growing heavier than traditional breeds during a shorter span of your time and producing tons more eggs annually than their indigenous counterparts.

Rainbow Rooster farmers in Nairobi report having up to 300 eggs produced by one Rainbow breed in its lifetime compared to the 80-egg lifetime average for an indigenous Kienyeji layer [1]. Kuroiler farmers in Uganda report that it’s commonplace to possess a bird weigh up to 4 Kgs at maturity compared to 1.5 Kgs for indigenous Kienyeji birds [2].

Produces more eggs

Unlike a number of the normal Kienyeji breeds, improved Kienyeji breeds have higher disease resistance in order that they fall sick less easily with proper care and hygiene.

Can survive on local feeds

Another advantage is that improved Kienyeji breeds, a bit like the local breeds, don’t need to be feed up with commercial feeds. They can, when older, survive on local feeds like crushed sorghum, millet etc. and locally available food like greens, insects and leftovers.
