Characteristics of KARI chicken.

 

  1. It is kept for both meat and eggs production.
  2. It matures at a very fast rate and weighs 2.1Kg for the KARI cockerel and 1.5Kg for the KARI hen.
  3. When properly fed and managed,they can lay from 220 upto 280 eggs in a year.
  4. They contain a variety of colours.
  5. The KARI breed has a very high resistance to diseases.
  6. Their products i.e the meat and eggs are highly nutritious thus advantageous to the farmer as he earns more from their sale.
  7. They can feed on food remains and not necessarily on feeds thus they are quite cost effective.
  8. The hen can sit on the eggs thus saves the farmer the cost of incubators.

Every farmer needs to provide their chicks with proper feeds from when they are one day old till maturity.The Kenya Agricultural Research Institute encourages farmers to feed their chicks with home made feeds which are more nutritious than commercial feeds.
