Water is affected and affects the environment in different ways.
Contaminated water can harbor bacteria, such as those responsible for diarrhea, cholera, dysentery, typhoid, hepatitis A and polio.
According to the UN every year, approximately 297000 children under five die from diseases linked to poor sanitation, poor hygiene, or unsafe drinking water
Water pollution has a great impact on human health. Water is a natural resource that all living creatures require. Clean water is also used in manufacturing and for social and economic development, however according to the UN 2.2 billion people lack access to safe drinking water services.
The UN and WHO list the following statistics on water pollution;
Since 1990s, water pollution has worsened in almost all rivers in Asia, Latin America, and Africa.
Around 785 million people do not have basic drinking –water services.
Experts estimate that by 2025 , half of the world’s population will live in a water – stressed environment.
Around 2 billion people live with high levels of water stress meaning the amount of water available is less than the amount required.
Over half the global population do not have safely managed sanitation services.
Overuse of fresh water in household settings means there is less fresh water for agricultural use these in turn affects humans on a food scarcity level. Many livestock species rely on freshwater. Wasting water or overusing water means you are wasting the energy intensive process of filtration.
Deteriorating water quality is damaging the environment, hence everyone needs to be careful on waste dumping as the quality of water affects our health in many ways. Failure to take care of the environment is neglecting our health and our life’s.
Cutting down trees, polluting the water affects the amount and quality of water. Great leaders of these nation like late Wangari Mathai who understood the relationship between water and trees in great ways campaigned for planning of tress and preserving water, they also fought against water pollution. When there is a waterborne disease outbreak many die of it due to high levels of water pollution as the disease is spread through the water.
