Office chairs test procedures.

Office chairs test procedures.

On this article you will get to know the Office chairs test procedures.  After the designing and manufacture of office chairs they are subjected to various loads for a period of time to test whether the design is fit.The chair is subjected to loads at various parts of the seat. They increase the amount of load until a maximum point of load is archieved.Once the office chair starts getting damaged or having broken parts the test marks that point as the maximum point.

Terms used in office chair testing.

i. Disabling damage.

This is the damage done on office chairs that would make it unsuitable for use.Using this type of chair might lead to serious injuries.

ii. Acceptance level.

This is the level of performance required to pass the test subjected to the office chairs.

iii. Test platform.

This is the platform where the testing occurs. The platform may be a floor, table or a flat surface.

iv. Structural breakage.

This is the failure of office chair when it is subjected to loads of different amounts.

Types of tests in office chair tests

i. Cyclic Pneumatic Back tilt/seat inclination adjustment mechanism test.

The pneumatic back tilt and the seat inclination are tested separately to determine the strength of the back tilt. For the pneumatic back tilt test, the office chair is subjected to tensional forces by tying up chains around the base and pulling it.For the seat inclination adjustment, they use a mechanism test. The test is strongly attached to a platform and loops are tied around the chair and it it pulled back and forth.

ii. Cyclic vertical load test on one arm.

This test is used to measure the vertical resistance of the chair by putting pressure on it vertically. An air cylinder is used to apply pressure on the either the central point or the edge of the arm.The load is slowly increased until they reach a break point.

iii. Cyclic side thrust load test on arms.

This is where a chain loop is tied around the central part of the arm rest and in a cycling manner the arm of the chair is rotated at 20 cycles per minute. They continously increase the load subject to the arm until a point of failure is attained.

iv. Cyclic vertical load tests on seats, bases and casters.

This is where the seat is subjected to vertical loads while the chair casters are alligned in a right angle and they are subjected to torsional forces. The test is done continously until an acceptance level is attained.

v. Cyclic fatigue test of swivel bearings.

This involves rotating the seat swivel to 360 degrees in different directions. The testing is continously done until the torque goees beyond the acceptance level.

vi. Cyclic pneumatic height adjustment durability test.

This involves subjecting vertical loads on the seat while adjusted to different height levels. The test begins with a 250pounds load at the highest level then the weight is increased. The height adjustments are made as they repeat this process until the pneumatic lever breaks.

vii. Back stability test.

The office chair is subjected to different loads on the back rest in a front and backwards manner. This is done until the chair starts tilting backwards.

viii. Caster and base durability test.

This is where load is placed on the seat and it is moved back and forth as the wheels rotate. The main purpose of this test is to evaluate the durability of the base of the chair and whether the casters can subject to wear and tear when moved around.

ix. Cyclic back and back tilt mechanism fatigue test for chairs with spring type tension controls.

This involves subjecting the back of the chair to various amounts of loads so as to gauge the resistance of the chair back system. The loads are applied in the front and back surface in a front-backwards movement.

x. Fabric durability test.

This is where the seat fabric is subjected to back and forth forces on the seat to test for wear and tear.
